What are Breast Implants?
A breast implant is a prosthesis that is surgically placed within a breast in order to enlarge or enhance the overall appearance of the breast. Implants can contain a variety of materials including silicone or saline. These materials are fluid or gel-like in consistency and are contained within the implant sac. Breast implants add size, firmness, shape, and contour to your overall physique by enhancing your cleavage.
What are the Benefits of Breast Implants?
Breast implants empower you to improve your breasts by adding shape, volume, and fullness. Breast surgery with Dr. Emmett will let you increase the fullness of your breasts in a single simple procedure.
Types of Breast Implants
At Emmett Plastic Surgery, we only offer in the most advanced and safest breast implants. Women over the age of 22 can choose between new FDA-approved cohesive silicone gel breast implants, and women over the age of 18 can select from implants that are saline-filled. Each type of implant has its own set of benefits which Dr. Emmett can discuss with you during your initial consultation.
The choice between saline and silicone implants often confuses patients. Dr. Jennifer Emmett has helped many patients understand the unique benefits of saline and silicone implants and has given them the exact information they need to make the right implant choice.
Before & After Implants
While both saline and silicone implants have outer silicone shells, their contents are the main difference. Saline-filled implants contain a sterilized solution of salt water. Therefore, if the implant does happen to leak, your body will naturally and easily absorb the saline with no negative side effects. However, the implant is not filled before surgery. Dr. Emmett will place the empty shell into place and them fill the implant with the appropriate and predetermined amount of saline solution.
Silicone implants contain a cohesive silicone gel, which is equally as safe as saline, within the outer silicone shell. In the unlikely event of a rupture or leak, the gelatin-like substance is self-binding, which prevents it from spreading beyond the area of the implant itself. In addition, the FDA-approved silicone implants we use have unique cohering properties. This enables the silicone inside your implant to behave as a solid, which gives it tremendously realistic contouring effects. A silicone implant is pre-filled and the gelatin-like quality makes some patients feel that they look and feel more like natural breast tissue.
How Will I Choose My Implant Size?
At Emmett Plastic Surgery, Dr. Emmett offers personalized breast implant sizing using a unique approach that gives you a realistic perspective of your post-operative results. During your consultation, Dr. Emmett will guide you in choosing the exact size that’s right for you by using a bra with different sized implants.

Breast Implant Placement
During your breast implant procedure, Dr. Emmett will administer general anesthesia and create an inconspicuous incision. Dr. Emmett’s incision strategy will be based on the type of breast implant and your natural anatomy and will minimize scarring. The incision may be around the nipple area, underneath the breast, or in the armpit area. Next, Dr. Emmett will insert the implant into the pocket of space created through the incision, either under or on top of the pectoral muscle. If you choose saline implants Dr. Emmett will then fill the implant.
After ensuring that your implant is in the proper position, Dr. Emmett will close the incision with layered sutures. The incision lines will fade as you heal. The results of your breast implants will be immediately visible. Breast surgery for implants is an extremely safe procedure and Dr. Emmett is committed to making sure you are completely satisfied with your results. Our office will give you detailed instructions for follow-up visits and prescribe medication to minimize discomfort, particularly during the initial postoperative stage of the recovery process.
Are Breast Implants Safe?
If you are considering breast augmentation, you may wonder about the safety of breast implants. The Institute of Medicine’s findings in 1999 and 30 years of clinical experience demonstrate that breast implants are quite safe. Breast implants, like any other medical device, are not intended to last a lifetime, and you will need to schedule annual follow-up check-ups.
You should also know that at Emmett Plastic Surgery, we take every precaution humanly possible to make certain your implant procedure is flawless from a safety perspective.
