Home Breast Augmentation What to Expect During a Breast Augmentation Consultation?

May 12, 2021

If you’re reading this, then you’ve likely been considering breast augmentation surgery for quite a while and are looking for more answers. We’re happy to walk you through the first steps of breast augmentation surgery — the initial consultation.

During your consultation, you’ll have a chance to talk with Dr. Jennifer Emmett, a Double-Board certified plastic surgeon, about your specific needs, questions, and desires you hope to achieve during breast augmentation surgery. This can include mentioning which specific parts of your breasts or nipples you want to enhance, the size of your implants, and your overall expectations for breast enhancement.

If you’re curious what an initial breast augmentation consultation entails, then continue reading, and hopefully, we can make you feel more confident to reach out about the next steps toward scheduling your first consultation.

What to Bring to Your Consultation

Bring some of your favorite outfits, bras, blouses, and tops as you can try them on while getting fitted for different implant sizes. Bringing in these items can help you visualize your new results to determine the right implant size.

Also, write down a checklist of questions or concerns before your consultation so that you can openly discuss these with the doctor.

In addition to bringing outfits and questions, make sure you bring a list of all the medications you’re currently taking. It will also be helpful to know your medical history, so try to research and remember any past surgeries or procedures you’ve had done in the past to help Dr. Emmett assess your health level.

What to Wear to a Breast Augmentation Consultation

Feel free to arrive at your initial consultation wearing loose and comfortable clothing.

Because you will be removing clothing at one point during your consultation, you’ll want to wear something you can easily change out of for the physical examination by Dr. Emmett and a nurse.

As mentioned above, you may want to bring extra changes of clothing, such as a fitted t-shirt, blouses, and different tops so you can try different implant sizers for your fitting.

How Long Does the Consultation Last?

Breast augmentation consultations on average last about an hour.

During the consultation, Dr. Emmett will talk to you about your health history to determine if you’re a suitable candidate for breast augmentation surgery. This can include whether or not you’re a smoker, previous surgeries, if you’ve had mammograms or biopsies, and other relevant health histories to ensure you’re healthy enough for surgery.

In addition to finding out more about your health, Dr. Emmett will examine your breasts and take measurements and photos to determine which breast implant options may be best for you.

Dr. Emmett will then have you try on a few different implant sizes and show you the differences in front of a mirror. This way, she can show you exactly what you will look like with your implants. You will likely try on only a few different sizes that have been determined by Dr. Emmett that will match your body type for the most realistic results.

She will also talk to you about your preferred method of operative plan, and help you choose whether you’d like saline or silicone implants.

Dr. Emmett will also show you prior patients’ before and after photos so you can see the types of results you can expect.

You will also have plenty of time to ask Dr. Emmett questions or address any concerns you have about breast augmentation surgery.

Questions to Ask During the Consultation

Dr. Emmett wants to ensure that you’re a healthy candidate for surgery, and make sure you understand and evaluate any potential risks or complications that may affect your candidacy.

Here are some common questions that you should ask during your consultation:

Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery?

After your consultation, Dr. Emmett will make an assessment of whether or not surgery is right for you.

Are the results I’m looking for realistic and achievable?

Dr. Emmett will use her expertise to guide you toward your most realistic and achievable results.

What type of implant and incision do you recommend?

There are different areas of incision for breast augmentation, either under the breast, or the armpit, and Dr. Emmett can help pick the right option for you.

Will I still be able to breastfeed with breast implants?

Most women are still able to breastfeed with implants. However, if you plan on being a mother in the future, let Dr. Emmett know as this can help determine where your implants will be placed. Implants can be placed either above, or below the breast muscle, in subglandular or submuscular placements.

What is the most common complication experienced during surgery?

Adverse reactions to anesthesia and bleeding can occur during surgery, but with proper planning, these risks can be minimized.

How long will my results last?

Today’s breast implants can last much longer than they used to. Implants easily last 10 years and can often last up to 20 years.

Which do you recommend, silicone or saline?

Each choice has its benefits. Saline, if ruptured, can safely deflate into your breast tissue, as it’s only saltwater. We also use a self-adhesive silicone that won’t leak into your tissue if it ruptures. Talk to Dr. Emmett about what choice is best for you.

Assessing Potential Risks

Dr. Emmett will address any concerns you have regarding breast implants’ safety and the surgery as a whole.

Just like all kinds of surgery, breast augmentation has its potential risks that you should be aware of before deciding if augmentation surgery is right for you.

But with proper planning, considerations, and candid answers during the consultation, Dr. Emmett can help minimize these risks, which may include:

  • Capsular contracture (scar tissue around the implant)
  • Implant leak or rupture
  • Deflation of implant
  • Implant shifting
  • Loss of nipple sensation
