Your Personal Guide to Breast Augmentation
We all want to look and feel beautiful. For women, breast augmentation could be one of the best ways to quickly improve your self-image, physique, and overall quality of life.
Weight loss, aging, or other body-changing circumstances can often cosmetically alter your breasts’ shape and firmness. These changes can make you feel self-conscious and affect your confidence.
Breast augmentation can help make your breast more shapely, fuller, and larger. If you’re unhappy with your breast size (too small or too large) or shape (not full or asymmetrical), Dr. Jennifer Emmett and Emmett Plastic Surgery can help you look and feel great, regardless of your cosmetic goals.
Let’s explore all the different types of breast augmentation.
Breast augmentation, or augmentation mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to enhance your breasts’ size and proportion. Also, some patients have breast augmentation to fix breast asymmetry. There are two primary ways in which to enhance breast size – breast implants or fat transfer.
Breast augmentation surgery is ideal for increasing your breast’s fullness and projection, balancing your breasts and hip contours for that hourglass shape, and enhancing your overall self-image and self-confidence.
Another common breast enhancement is correcting severely drooping breasts, often from weight-loss or aging. Along with a breast augmentation, in these circumstances, you may require a breast lift to give your breast that lifted and fuller look. Often, you can do a breast lift at the same time as your augmentation surgery.

What to Expect During Your Breast Augmentation Consultation
Our philosophy at Emmett Plastic Surgery is patient-centric, meaning that your aesthetic and health needs come before anything.
The best way to achieve ideal results and satisfy your needs is to clearly and thoroughly share with Dr. Emmett why you are interested in breast augmentation.
- What specific of your breasts do you want to enhance?
- How large do you want the implants to be?
- What are your overall expectations for your breast enhancement?
Discuss any potential risks with breast augmentation surgery
During your initial consultation with Dr. Emmett, you will also evaluate and discuss any potential risks or complications that may affect your candidacy. She will also address any lingering concerns you may have about breast implants’ safety and the surgery as a whole.
As with any surgery, breast augmentation comes with risks. Fortunately, with proper planning, we can minimize these risks.
Risks associated with placing breast implants can include:
- Capsular contracture
- Implant leak or rupture
- Deflation of implant
- Implant shifting
- Loss of nipple sensation
Dr. Emmett will discuss all of these potential risks and answer all of your questions during your initial breast enhancement consultation.
Determine your options for breast augmentation?
She will then describe the different options available to you and offer her recommended treatment strategy, which she will personalize to fit your needs and goals based on the information she gathers during your consultation.
Evaluate if you are a candidate for augmentation mammaplasty?
Your breasts should be fully developed and there must be enough tissue present in the area to be a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery. These circumstances are especially important if you want to use breast implants verus fat transfer. There needs to be enough tissue to support the size of your desired breast implants.
Patients must also have a clear understanding of the psychological factors for breast augmentation and have realistic goals. It’s essential to understand that the results of your enlargement will be an improvement upon your natural breasts but cannot provide you with unattainable perfection.

What are Breast Implants?
A breast implant is a prosthesis that is surgically placed within a breast in order to enlarge or enhance the overall appearance of the breast. Implants can contain a variety of materials including silicone or saline. These materials are fluid or gel-like in consistency and are contained within the implant sac. Breast implants add size, firmness, shape, and contour to your overall physique by enhancing your cleavage.
What Are The Benefits Of Breast Implants?
Breast implants empower you to improve your breasts by adding shape, volume, and fullness. Breast surgery with Dr. Emmett will let you increase the fullness of your breasts in a single simple procedure.
Types Of Breast Implants
At Emmett Plastic Surgery, we only offer in the most advanced and safest breast implants. Women over the age of 22 can choose between new FDA-approved cohesive silicone gel breast implants, and women over the age of 18 can select from implants that are saline-filled. Each type of implant has its own set of benefits which Dr. Emmett can discuss with you during your initial consultation.
The choice between saline and silicone implants often confuses patients. Dr. Jennifer Emmett has helped many patients understand the unique benefits of saline and silicone implants and has given them the exact information they need to make the right implant choice.

Saline Implants
While both saline and silicone implants have outer silicone shells, their contents are the main difference. Saline-filled implants contain a sterilized solution of salt water. Therefore, if the implant does happen to leak, your body will naturally and easily absorb the saline with no negative side effects. However, the implant is not filled before surgery. Dr. Emmett will place the empty shell into place and them fill the implant with the appropriate and predetermined amount of saline solution.
Silicone Implants
Silicone implants contain a cohesive silicone gel, which is equally as safe as saline, within the outer silicone shell. In the unlikely event of a rupture or leak, the gelatin-like substance is self-binding, which prevents it from spreading beyond the area of the implant itself. In addition, the FDA-approved silicone implants we use have unique cohering properties. This enables the silicone inside your implant to behave as a solid, which gives it tremendously realistic contouring effects. A silicone implant is pre-filled and the gelatin-like quality makes some patients feel that they look and feel more like natural breast tissue.
Are Breast Implants Safe?
If you are considering breast augmentation, you may wonder about the safety of breast implants. The Institute of Medicine’s findings in 1999 and 30 years of clinical experience demonstrate that breast implants are quite safe. Breast implants, like any other medical device, are not intended to last a lifetime, and you will need to schedule annual follow-up check-ups.
You should also know that at Emmett Plastic Surgery, we take every precaution humanly possible to make certain your implant procedure is flawless from a safety perspective. How to Select Your Breast Implant Size
We pride ourselves on our unique approach to helping you find your ideal breast size by utilizing a highly customizable sizing bra to give you a realistic physical simulation of what your breasts will look like after your enhancement procedure. This contrasts to the computer-generated images that others offer, which may not accurately reflect your potential results or may not give you a comprehensive understanding of what your new breasts will look and feel like on your body.
Using our sizing bra to accurately show your own body how your results will look gives you added convenience and more realistic simulation. Our approach and emphasis on providing you with your ideal enhancement results have led to overwhelming patient satisfaction, and you have the added comfort of knowing you will be happy.
Dr. Emmet’s patients all agree that this is by far the very best way to confidently decide breast size and style. How Breast Implants are Uses in Breast Augmentation Surgery
During your breast augmentation procedure, Dr. Emmett will use breast implants to improve your breasts’ volume and size. The surgery takes about an hour and will require general anesthesia. Before surgery, Dr. Emmett will discuss implant options and decide which type of implant is best for you.
First, Dr. Emmett will make incisions either around the nipple, under the breast, or in the armpit. The incision placement will depend on your anatomy and details discussed with Dr. Emmett before surgery. The incisions will create a pocket in which to insert the implant.
Then, Dr. Emmett will then carefully and skillfully put the implant into place. Finally, she will close and suture the incision.
