| emmett plastic surgeryWhether you’ve eaten more vegetables or spent more time at the gym, you may still deal with unwanted areas of fat that negatively impact your body contours. Men and women who are unhappy with their body contours and want to target specific areas of fat will want to take the time to speak to Dr. Jennifer Emmett of Emmett Plastic Surgery in Lone Tree, Colorado. She may recommend a procedure known as liposuction.

Understanding how liposuction works

It is critical that patients understand that liposuction is not a weight loss solution. The liposuction treatment is catered towards patients who need to remove unwanted fat from areas of the body that have not responded to other methods of treatment, including changes in diet and exercise. Liposuction can be used anywhere on the body to remove excess fat, but is most commonly used for the treatment of fat in the:

  • Buttocks
  • Thighs
  • Stomach
  • Flanks
  • Upper arms

Liposuction uses an instrument called a canula that is inserted into the body and suctions out fat cells underneath the skin. Liposuction permanently removes fat cells in the problem area to ensure results are achieved. While patients may lose some weight due to the loss of fat cells, that is not the goal of liposuction. Instead, liposuction is viewed as a body contouring solution for patients who struggle with targeting specific areas of the body even with diet and exercise.

What about excess skin?

Depending on the firmness of the skin and the amount of fat being removed, some patients may have excess skin that will hang from the treatment area. If this is a concern, the doctor may provide excess skin removal at the same time.
