Home Breast Augmentation What Are Teardrop Breast Implants?

December 9, 2022

If you’re interested in breast augmentation surgery and enhancing the look of your breasts, you’ve probably considered the size you’d like to achieve. You’re also likely familiar with the two implant types, silicone, and saline.

However, another one of the most important decisions you’ll need to make regarding your breast implants is their shape. While round implants are the most common, some women opt for teardrop implants.

Both types of implants can improve the look of your breasts and increase their size. Schedule a free initial consultation with Dr. Emmett to decide which shape implant is best for you. Learn more about teardrop implants, their benefits, and drawbacks, whether you’re a good candidate, and why you should schedule your consultation with the highly skilled Dr. Jennifer Emmett.

What is the difference between teardrop and round implants?

The difference between teardrop implants and round implants is their shape. A teardrop implant looks more natural, as it has a teardrop or oval shape, while a round implant is entirely round and symmetrical. The teardrop implant has more volume at the bottom, much like a natural breast, whereas a round implant is more plump and round.

Teardrop implants were originally created for those needing breast reconstruction surgery. However, today, others can be candidates for this implant shape if they meet the proper criteria. Regardless of the shape you choose, an experienced surgeon can make your breasts look perkier and more youthful, increasing your confidence and self-esteem.

Benefits and drawbacks of teardrop implants

Women who choose teardrop implants often make this decision because they feel it will make their breasts look more natural.

While this can be true, teardrop implants may not look as natural as round implants when a woman is lying down. One advantage to teardrop implants is they give women a great side boob, which is trending.

However, while teardrop implants offer a sought-after asymmetrical look, their asymmetry can increase the risk of the implant rotating. If a teardrop implant rotates, the shape and look of the breast will change and need to be corrected.  When a round implant rotates, it would not need to be corrected due to its symmetrical shape.

Other disadvantages of teardrop implants are they may cost more, require a larger incision, and have a prolonged recovery time.

Are teardrop implants safe?

Teardrop implants are FDA-approved, just like round implants.

Over the years, with technology and advancements, breast implants and cosmetic surgeries have become safer than ever before.

To determine whether implants and surgery are safe for you, you’ll have a consultation with Dr. Emmett and discuss your health and lifestyle.

To increase the chances of a successful surgery and short recovery time, Dr. Emmett can tell you if you need to make any lifestyle changes, such as losing weight and quitting smoking.

If you have no serious health problems, you’re likely a great candidate for round or teardrop implants.

If you’re taking certain medications that may affect your surgery, Dr. Emmett will tell you if you need to quit taking them ahead of time.

What are teardrop implants made of?

Teardrop implants first appeared in the United States in 2012 and have become increasingly popular.

While round implants can be filled with a silicone or saline material, teardrop implants have a silicone shell and can only be filled with a silicone gel.

Most people claim that silicone implants feel and look the most natural, which gives silicone implants a slight advantage over saline implants.

However, a patient must be 22 years old to get silicone or teardrop implants. If you are younger than 22 years old, you would be a better candidate for round saline implants.

Who are the best candidates for teardrop implants?

If you’re someone who needs reconstructive surgery, you would be a prime candidate for teardrop implants. Initially, reconstructive patients were the only ones to receive teardrop implants.  Now, however, the following criteria may make you a great candidate for teardrop implants instead:

  • 22 years old
  • A petite body type
  • In good health
  • Low-sitting nipples
  • Major breast sagging tissue
  • Minimal breast tissue
  • Small distance between the breast fold and the areola
  • Wide-set breasts
  • You want subtle results
